We&#8217;re no strangers to these challenges either: thanks to our work with digital\/creative clients, we&#8217;ve become clued up on what they must overcome every single day.<\/p>\n<p>During the snazzy re-design of our website, however, we had the opportunity to experience these challenges first hand. We sat down with the ever-amazing\u00a0branding experts at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/projectsimply.com\/\">Project Simply<\/a>\u00a0and our brilliant\u00a0website building\u00a0friends, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theprofitablefirm.com\/\">Profitable Firm<\/a>\u00a0to discuss\u00a0the issues most common for agencies sharing their arenas and received some interest nuggets of information.<\/p>\n<p>Once our discussions had finished, it became clear which were the eight most prevalent challenges, but now we want to know: which of the eight is the greatest challenge for your agency? Although this isn&#8217;t a worry exclusive to digital\/creative agencies, it&#8217;s more profound in that you simply can&#8217;t rush creativity and expect great results. Factor in the day-to-day running of a busy agency and the need to keep on top of your workload, and it&#8217;s easy to see that time really isn&#8217;t your friend.<\/p>\n<p>We found the greatest aspects of this challenge were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Managing<\/strong> time effectively and productively,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recovering<\/strong> time spent on bookkeeping and accounting,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Understanding<\/strong> the difference between value added and time spent,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning<\/strong> to prioritise and organise projects effectively,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>tracking<\/strong> the team\u2019s time, to better\u00a0measure productivity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Tech<\/h3>\n<p>Software and technology form the backbone of your agency &#8211; without them you can&#8217;t really be a digital creative or deliver the services your customers require. But tech isn&#8217;t just for the creative side of things: it&#8217;s more than likely that you&#8217;ve used tech for the business side of the agency too &#8211; and it&#8217;s sometimes a hindrance more than a help.<\/p>\n<p>We found the challenges in tech involved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keeping up to date<\/strong> with the latest software and technology releases,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Being swayed<\/strong> by what&#8217;s cool over what&#8217;s useful,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automating\u00a0<\/strong>more menial tasks\u00a0successfully,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Integrating<\/strong>\u00a0all your apps and software\u00a0effectively,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>customising<\/strong> tech to address the needs of your customers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Team<\/h3>\n<p>Your agency team really ARE the business \u2013 they&#8217;re the driving force and without the right people on board, quality of work is quickly compromised. Focusing on successful recruitment and engagement is a huge element of running an agency, but it&#8217;s still a huge challenge for many.<\/p>\n<p>Some agencies struggle to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Find the right creative<\/strong> and support people to join the team,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make a choice<\/strong>\u00a0between employees or freelancers and contractors,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Offer the right incentives <\/strong>&#8211;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>both financial and\u00a0non-financial &#8211; to potential employees,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cope with a poor fit<\/strong>\u00a0from a new employee,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>keep a clear focus<\/strong> on keeping teams happy, motivated and working hard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Tax<\/h3>\n<p>As we know better than most, there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes. With that in mind, having a good long-term plan for your tax strategy is not only necessary, but a crucial part of making sure the agency is profitable and\u00a0able to grow successfully.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges around tax involve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Withdrawing\u00a0income<\/strong>\u00a0in the most tax-effective way,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retaining\u00a0enough cash<\/strong> in the agency to pay your tax bill,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Understanding relevant tax relief<\/strong>\u00a0(the R&amp;D Tax Credit, for instance),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Staying up to date<\/strong> with changes to tax law,<\/li>\n<li>and h<strong>aving\u00a0a workable tax strategy<\/strong> in place, complete with clear tax planning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Cash<\/h3>\n<p>Cash is the petrol in your agency\u2019s engine \u2013 without it, you\u2019ll quickly lose your forward momentum and grind to a serious halt. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important that you understand how cash flows into and out of the agency &#8211; and the best ways to keep that cash pipeline looking topped-up and healthy.<\/p>\n<p>The main areas of this challenge are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Making enough money<\/strong> to pay yourself and your team\u2019s wages,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Knowing how to invest<\/strong> and save when you do have a surplus of cash,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Being tough on late paying clients<\/strong> so that you don&#8217;t rack up debts of your own,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Considering cash flow<\/strong>, not just what\u2019s in the bank.<\/li>\n<li>And\u00a0<strong>maintaining<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>a Plan B<\/strong> in case more cash and funding is needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Profit<\/h3>\n<p>This one speaks for itself; if your agency is going to achieve financial stability, and find the funds to expand and grow, then you need to be making a profit. Creativity may be the main driver, but profitability has to be built into your agency model too.<\/p>\n<p>The challenges with profit are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Understand<\/strong> your margins and set the right price points,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generate\u00a0<\/strong>enough profit for the business to survive and grow,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know<\/strong> the difference between cash flow and profit,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Think<\/strong> smarter about profitability ,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>measure<\/strong>\u00a0profitability using the right metrics and objectives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Growth<\/h3>\n<p>You may have started out with a home office for one, but ultimately your goal is likely to be to expand and evolve the agency into something bigger, better and even more creative &#8211; and that means growth!<\/p>\n<p>Our discussion told us that the challenges with growth are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pinning down key growth goals<\/strong> and their\u00a0importance,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creating<\/strong>\u00a0a workable growth plan with clear milestones,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balancing\u00a0<\/strong>the need to make profit with the funding needed to grow,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building scalability<\/strong> and systematic processes into your model,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>creating\u00a0<\/strong>a team that shares your vision and can deliver growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Pivot<\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got &#8216;pivot&#8217; down as a future buzzword, but for now you may be more familiar with it as the feeling when your agency begins moving in one direction, only to change course as new opportunities make themselves known. Essentially, what remains is your base business model (or products\/client\/idea), only it&#8217;s now pivoted to a new area of focus.<\/p>\n<p>With a pivot, the challenges are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Being alert<\/strong> to new opportunities and take advice on\u00a0their impact,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Considering <\/strong>what you do well that can be\u00a0extended to other needs your clients have,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluate<\/strong> how to make exchanges with your customers more valuable for\u00a0both parties,<\/li>\n<li>And <strong>review<\/strong> recurring revenue options beyond the initial project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Know Your Challenge and Conquer It!<\/h3>\n<p>So, which of those eight challenges rings true for your agency? Knowing where you need to make changes is the first step to bringing about that change, so\u00a0if any of these\u00a0challenges have jumped out at you, you&#8217;ll know exactly where to focus.<\/p>\n<p>The key with tackling these challenges\u00a0is to take things one step at a time; prioritise your challenges and focus on one area of improvement, rather than getting bogged down with mass change all at once.
